RURAL DIABETES ( A Unit Of Sree Renga Nursing Home )
Description
The CHENGALPATTU DIABETIC CARE AND RESEARCH CENTRE was started in 2001 at Sree Renga Nursing Home premises to cater mainly to the lower socio economic group of people, in the villages around Chengalpattu, which is about 60 kms from Chennai city, in Tamilnadu.
Chengalpattu is a small town inhabited by middle income and lower middle income groups of persons. There are more than 100 small villages and 10 small towns in the ambit of 20kms from Chengalpattu. Inhabitants are mostly agriculturists, small artisans and traders. Their incomes are very meager, not exceeding INR 3,000 (US $ 61) for the year. Most of them have no awareness of health problems they have and, in the event of being overcome by them, resign themselves to fate, and do not make attempts to have appropriate diagnosis. Further, facilities for diagnosis do not exist in the vicinity. They have to trek anything between 10 and 30 kms to get access to such facilities.
Diabetes is a life long disease. It is growing in an alarming proportion in this country. By WHO standards, more than 30 million i.e. 30% of the population is affected by Diabetes in India, as of now. Due to our changing lifestyles, Diabetes which was considered a problem associated with affluence, is now found in the people belonging to the lower socio economic group in the villages. Hence to create awareness and to educate people and to meet all the needs of the Diabetic patients under one roof, the CHENGALPATTU DIABETIC CARE AND RESEARCH CENTRE was started in the Nursing Home premises.
