Reform Temple of Suffern - Shir Shalom
Description
Our congregation was founded in 1971 with 10 families. Today we serve about 150 families, from all areas of Rockland County, NY, parts of Orange County, NY and Bergen County, NJ.
Our original Temple building was purchased in 1976, and expanded to a new sanctuary which was completed in 1987. Our most recent addition in 1993 gave us three new classrooms and additional worship space. The exterior of our new sanctuary was designed to blend in with the surrounding environment, and the interior is one that lends itself to a very special intimacy.
As Jews, we see our mission as unique in the world. We are to be a "light unto the nations," as God’s partners to help repair our world. Tzedakah is a crucial responsibility. We recognize that our perspective on history is different and we want to be certain to relay this to our children, not merely as information but in the way we live. This is evidenced not just in our ritual practices but in the way we interact among ourselves as a community, the value we place on mitzvot, the emphasis and caring with which we raise our children, and our active concern for the world around us.
