Description
Kiwanis was founded in 1915 by Joe Prance of Detroit, Michigan. Kiwanis means "WE BUILD", specifically meaning that the clubs build better communities. It was not until 1987 that women were first admitted; 50,000 are now members. Kiwanis today includes more than 300,000 members in more than 8,000 clubs in some 80 nations and geographic areas.
To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and good will.
