Description
In March 1969, the Republic of China on Taiwan established a Trade Mission in Singapore, which was later re-named Taipei Representative Office in Singapore. It is to promote bilateral links in the areas of economics, science, media, tourism, military and education between the two countries.
Among the ASEAN countries, our country has the closest economic ties with Singapore. The diverse industries in both countries have resulted in a competitive yet collaborative economic phenomenon. According to the statistics released by the Trade Development Board of Singapore, the total annual bilateral trade figure between the two countries stood at S$24.492 billion in 2000. For the first 4 months of 2001, the trade figure was S$7.067 billion. The main export from Singapore to Taiwan is electronics products and its components, petrol and petrochemical products, office and data machines and its components. Our main export to Singapore includes the electronics and its components, machines and electrical appliances, office and data machines, telecommunication apparatus, textile fibres and plastic materials.
In investment, Taiwanese businessmen invested in 40 projects totaling US$220 million in 2000, which has the average of US$5.5 million per project in Singapore. They are in the two main areas of banking and insurance services, taking up 89% of the total investment amount. From 1952 to 2000, our country has a total of 276 investment projects in Singapore, bringing the total amount to US$1.171 billion. In Taiwan, the investment from Singapore centered on food and beverage, machinery manufacturing, electrical, plastic, retail and wholesale, trade and financial and insurance services. Between 1952 to end of 2000, the accumulated investment projects from Singapore to Taiwan are 662, which exceed US$3.592 billion.
