Description

A Specialized Learning Environment

In a traditional classroom, one third of the school year is spent in review. For gifted students, who within a week can devour a month of standard classroom material, this slow pace and emphasis on review can be devastating. At the Rocky Mountain School an individualized learning plan enables students to work at their own pace. Students are never told they have to wait for classmates to "catch up" before they can move on to more interesting work. Because we understand that many students are neither sequential learners nor extroverts, adjustments are made for individual learning styles and personalities. Students are supported by faculty who understand the unique "special needs" of gifted students. In addition to core curricula areas, independent study, special programs and mentors support further study in virtually any area a student may wish to explore. Low student teacher ratios enable teachers to provide individual support and guidance. Students are grouped by ability and interests in multi-age classrooms. Gifted children who are with their true peers, often for the first time, develop self-confidence and a sense of belonging that is impossible in a classroom where they feel like "the odd duck." These students will be prepared to enter our global community with confidence in their potential and the ability to approach challenges with the creativity, skill and understanding of our differences and interdependence.

A Unique Perspective On Giftedness

Giftedness is often defined as high achievement. Unfortunately this definition excludes gifted student s with learning disabilities, underachievers, bored students who are labeled "trouble makers" and gifted students often girls who disguise their giftedness to gain social approval.

Rather than looking at giftedness in relationship to external achievement, at the Rocky Mountain School we view giftedness from within. With few exceptions, gifted and creative children demonstrate well-developed abstract reasoning skills. It is evidence of his ability to conceptualize at an advanced level that we consider the primary characteristic of giftedness.
