About River Rat Raft & Bike - A Brief History
It was in 1986, with nothing more than a few simple tools and a passion for riding mountain bikes, that Randy Calvin and then business partner Mark Hayden opened the doors to the bike shop. The two of them persuaded Specialized and Marin Bikes into selling them some stuff. It did not take long before River Rat's base customers were avid cyclists belonging to core riding groups like the ABC's and RoughRiders, a time when Marin sponsored pro riders like George Theobald and Joe Murray. This was back when mountain biking was just teething. River Rat developed it's roots here, supplying the avid mountain biker with specialty sought after parts.
River Rat evolved as mountain biking climbed the technology ladder from rigid to front suspended bikes to long travel downhill machines. Randy's passion for mountain biking combined with technical aptitude and forethought brought River Rat to it's current ranks as a specialty bike shop. River Rat is proud to have a reputation of stocking the industry's most sought after bikes and being a reliable source for technical knowledge. After 20 years, Randy is as passionate as ever about bikes, has the tool selection to die for and is watching and waiting to see where the industry will go next.
