Our founder Jesse Riddle, born in Webster, South Dakota, to a family of modest means, knew he would have to work his way through college. Fortunately, the retired jeweler for whom he had worked encouraged him to try jewelry school first. That training in jewelry and watch repair paid his way through the University of South Dakota and a lifetime career in the jewelry industry.
In 1958 when his hometown bank refused to lend him $2,000 for the jewelry store, he drove to Chicago to call on a jewelry wholesaler whom he convinced to sell him $10,000 of inventory on credit. That first store grew into a chain of more than 45 stores located in eleven Midwestern states. In 2002 Riddle’s Jewelry was ranked nineteenth in National Jeweler’s ranking of the top 40 jewelry chains in the nation.
