Shell access and personal cgi-bin! Having shell access to your website is extremely important, but very few other hosting companies allow it. They say that they offer 24 hour ftp access. What is that? It means that they do not even allow you access to the space that you are paying for. They also do not give customers their own cgi-bin directory. Any serious business is going to need the ability to run their own cgi scripts...without someone's "approval" and without paying extra fees.
Absolutely! You can back up your hard drive to it if you want. We have a terms of service agreement that clearly states what types of files that we do not allow our customers to serve, but the space that you paid for is yours. Many other hosting companies will actually go into your website and delete any files that do not have links to them from pages on your site (better read their fine print carefully). Also, beware of any company who says that they offer "unlimited" space or "unlimited" bandwidth. They are flat out lying! Again, read the fine print.
