- A consciousness was stirred by a church mission trip to Guatemala in August 2001 to build houses for those in need. Some research into consumerism and an attempt to understand this country's penchant for excess and for replacing and throwing away items that are still useable led to the discovery of businesses that reuse and recycle building products. In the spring of 2002, the ReStore founders visited several reuse facilities in the Midwest, some of which were Habitat ReStores. The idea of starting a ReStore in the Quad Cities was pitched to the Habitat board in June 2002. It was approved unanimously, forging a partnership between the ReStore founders and Habitat for Humanity-Quad Cities. The remainder of 2002 was spent finding a building, funding, material donations, and other needs in preparation for opening the doors on December 5th.
