About Us
Reekies is a small family run business founded by Christopher Reekie, a handloom weaver born in Selkirk, Scotland and who moved to Grasmere in 1950 to set up his own weaving business. Chris’s two sons were both taught how to weave when they left school and wife Mary was a trained darner and mender. So the whole operation from the raw wool, to the finished woven article, could be carried out by the family members.
Today, the weaving is done by Stewart Reekie, Chris’s grandson. He works over in the valley of Patterdale, one of the many outstandingly beautiful valleys in the English Lake District. Here he weaves the mohair blankets and knee rugs in a unique range of subtly blended shades. The main retail business in Grasmere is still run by the Reekies today and is visited by thousands of tourists annually.
