FireFree Plus PMFC Roofing Materials
Description
The individual fiber cement components are stored in large silos adjacent to the manufacturing plant. From a 24 hour manned computerized control room, exact quantities of each ingredient along with the first phase of color oxide are pumped from the respective silos to what amounts to a giant mixing bowl where they are batched (mixed) together into a mud-like material.
After the "mud" is mixed up, it is released in small "globs" onto a conveyer belt where it moves into a 600-ton press. The "mud" is pressed inside large molds, which gives the FireFree Plus its initial shape and texture. Each mold is made up of 4-5 pieces of FireFree Plus.
After being pressed at 600 tons the molded product, still in a wet phase, moves along a conveyer and under an initial spray of pigmented polymer (pre-autoclave polymer). The color oxide is blended into the polymer and they literally are soaked into the entire surface in the following two ways: 1) Fiber cement products are inherently porous (just like your skin) and the pigmented polymer enters the product through these pores until it soaks clear through the bottom of the product and begins pooling on the surface. 2) Because the product has just been pressed by 600 tons, as it is going through the pre-autoclave spray it will expand slightly to release some of the pressure. This expansion creates a vacuum that literally helps suck the pigmented polymer into the product. (Imagine squeezing a sponge and holding it under water. While the sponge is still squished together, it will not absorb very much water. However, the more the sponge expands the more water it can absorb).
