About Me
After being born in the flatlands of Indiana in 1979 I commenced my outdoors education by going to boy scout camps in my younger years. Later on I went on canoeing and hiking adventures with my family and friends. Finally by high school age I had gotten involved in distance running as well as martial arts. Being involved in these two activities gave me the athletic base that I now use to help complete my various adventures. I went to college at Purdue University in 1997 and I initially got involved in the Purdue Canoe & Kayak club. I learned and taught flatwater and whitewater kayaking skills and soon got into the midwestern canoe racing scene. Around this time I also became a member of the Purdue Outing Club where I was able to cut my teeth by learning backpacking, rock climbing, and winter travel skills. It was also here where I had my first introduction into adventure racing by signing up to do the first annual Purdue Outing Club Adventure Race (POCAR) - the equivalent of a 48-hour foot rogaine. My team won this first race and I was hooked. Since then I have competed in all 6 POCARs with varying results. My favorite aspect of the POCAR was learning to do the map and compass work and to this day this is my favorite part of racing. I was inspired to learn everything I could about adventure racing and got heavily involved in mountain biking, orienteering, and paddling (the main sports involved) and spent 2001-2003 learning how to train, learning how to navigate properly, and how to race in general. A few years ago I moved to the western US for a job at the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada and now I am looking forward to starting a new job at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Out west I am able to put my skills and abilities to the test in the Sierra Nevada and Pacific Coastal mountains. My upcoming plans include training side by side with Team Cyclepath and with Team Racing With Giants , starting the base training for summer races , and of course heading back to the flatlands to relax and rest up from my adventures by visiting family and friends.
