Rainbow Women's Chorus Home Page

Description

The Board of Directors of Rainbow Pride Performing Arts of San Jose, Inc. (RPPA), a nonprofit organization under which the Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus (SVGMC) solely existed, decided to assess the interest in forming a women's chorus in the South Bay. Flyers were distributed and public service announcements were sent to major media outlets. On October 6, 1996, twenty-two women attended the first meeting at the Billy DeFrank Lesbian and Gay Community Center. Two very accomplished women agreed to co-direct the chorus: Lynne McLaughlin, former director of SVGMC, and Ruth Huber, a talented singer/composer and the founding director of Tapestry Singers in Austin, Texas.

The chorus's first public performance was two months later as the guests of the Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus. Since then, we have produced over 15 full-length concerts and performed at a multitude of community outreach events. These events have included PFLAG, the Billy DeFrank Lesbian and Gay Community Center, the NOW State Convention, Beans on Broadway, Oracle Corporation, Santa Clara County Council of Churches, Bay Area Women’s Political Caucus, Bay Area Career Women (BACW), South Bay Bears, and World AIDS Day.

RWC received a grant from the City of San Jose to participate in the San Jose Performing Arts Summer Series in August, 1997 at the Montgomery Theater. In June, 1998, we welcomed a special guest, well-known performer and composer Margie Adam, to join us for our concert at the San Jose Women's Club.
