Description
Located in Spokane, Washington, The Quest Youth Group is a branch of the Gay Youth Association (G.Y.A.) and is a non profit 5O1C3 organization dedicated to improving the lives of gay, bisexual, and questioning young men in the Inland Northwest. The Quest H.S. Youth Group serves young men ages 16-17 while the Quest Youth Group serves young men ages 18-25. Our purpose is to help transform gay and bisexual youth into role models, leaders, and volunteers for their friends, families, and communities. By cultivating talented, educated, and confident gay and bisexual young men we will not only improve their lives, but we will also challenge negative stereotypes which still exist in the world today. We will inspire, encourage, and support the youth we serve.
The Gay Youth Association and Quest Youth Group was started in 2003 by 21-year-old Ryan Oelrich. Ryan was inspired to start the organization by a dear friend and avid Quest supporter, John B., who also funded the organization’s entire operating budget for the first year. The group started with twelve young men and one event a month and has since grown to serve over 150 individuals and now offers an average of two events per week and a variety of different services. Gay, bisexual, and questioning young men come to Spokane from across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana to participate in Quest events and service projects
The organization is ground breaking in several areas. The first area being that the Gay Youth Association realizes that gay and bisexual young men, gay and bisexual young women, and transgendered youth all have unique needs and experiences. One size doesn’t always fit all when it comes to GLBTQ youth. As a result we currently target only the specific needs of gay, bisexual, and questioning young men. In the future and as resources become available, Quest is committed to starting a youth group specifically for gay and bisexual young women.
