About Queensland Tartan
The Queensland Tartan was initially designed by Mr Jack Allen of Bundaberg in 1995. It was a tartan of seven basic colours to depict the state of Queensland in winter, the bright sunshine state. Mr Allen, before he died in May 1997, requested the assistance of The Society of St. Andrew of Scotland, Bundaberg branch and The Scottish Clans Congress of Queensland to assist in the promotion of this special Queensland Tartan.
Over the years, after presentation to two governments with no success, Mr John Agnew the president of the Scottish Clans Congress decided to press on personally with the project. Although all Scottish Societies, bands and individuals who were canvassed agreed with the concept of the Queensland Tartan and Jack Allen’s design, they all agreed that it was a bright tartan. Following this the tartan was retained as the Dress tartan, the colours were then muted slightly to design the Hunting and Muted Queensland Tartans.
With these three tartans Mr Agnew proceeded to have them registered and accredited, as they had previously been noted, by the Tartan Society of Scotland. This was completed in October 1999. It was not directly issued as it had not as yet been given government approval. Then in May 2000 the Premier of Queensland, Mr Peter Beattie, gave his approval to the Tartan Society and the registration was granted. We had, at last, the official “Tartan Emblem of Queensland”.
