Description

I'm Sue Hooper, one of the team responsible for Isom's Quality Management System and quality products. I'd like to tell you how we developed our IS9001:2000 quality manual and Quality System Template.

In August 1991, when Saddam Hussein's army entered Kuwait, Isom had many contracts at the new King Fahd International Airport project in Saudi Arabia. Within a month the KFIA site became an American Airbase, with more than 10,000 troops, and Isom's biggest project ground to a halt.

Isom decided to use the slack period to work towards ISO 9000 (then it was BS 5750). The company's experiences of using consultants was not good - they found consultants listened to what Isom's staff had to say and then the consultants wrote that down in the form of a very expensive report. The company therefore decided to do it themselves. As professional communicators they had little difficulty in understanding the jargon of the standard. They used a lecturer in Quality Systems at the local college to verify what had been done and within five months of starting, Isom had achieved registration. In taking that course of action, the outlay in gaining registration was considerably reduced. Subsequently, Isom's quality management system has been successfully updated in-house to meet the requirements of ISO9000:1994 and, more recently, ISO9001:2000.
