About Us
Port Quality Interiors was established when, having arrived in Australia after 15 years in Hong Kong, we discovered our dream of living in a beautiful home was more likely a fantasy than a dream. We could not find quality furniture anywhere north of Brisbane. What we did find was poor quality and overpriced. To make matters worse there was very little by way of any choice and Indonesian imports and rustic style pine furniture appeared to have almost entirely taken over the market.
Elegant and classically styled quality solid wood furniture was nowhere to be found. After 3 months sitting on camp chairs our need was so great that we capitulated and paid over $300 each for Indonesian rattan chairs. Within 3 months bits were falling off. On closer inspection we found that extremely poor quality mild steel screws and nails were all that held the chairs together. These were now rapidly rusting away and splitting the rattan apart. The only viable option we were left with was to import furniture ourselves from places where we knew quality could be guaranteed like southern China and Cebu - and so a business was born!
When we opened our first store, it was naturally based in our home town, Port Douglas. People quizzed us - why not open in Cairns? The answer for that very quickly presented itself within our first month of operations when we discovered that some 80% of our sales were to people from all over Australia rather than only those from Cairns and Port Douglas. A resort town is ideal for exposure of our furniture to people from all over Australia and it seems that reasonably priced quality furniture is as difficult to find elsewhere as it is in our own little corner.
