Description

Excerpted from the website description:

A quantum bit [qbit] is the quantum generalisation of "normal" classical bit as used in computer language. Classically, a bit can be viewed as a variable which can assume the values 0 and 1. All information in your computer is eventually put into the form of 0's and 1's. A qbit, on the other hand, is a quantum mechanical two state system. Examples are the spin of a particle (i.e. up or down), the polarisation state of a photon (i.e. parallel or perpendicular polarized to a given axis), and also an atomic two level system with an excited electronic state and a ground state. The big difference between a classical bit and a qbit is the fact that a qbit can be in a superposition of both states. Only upon measurement does the qbit end up in either one of the states. Quantum Mechanics tells us that the probability for ending up in one of the states is given by the absolute square of the amplitude of this state in the superposition.
