MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the Public Utilites Commission is to regulate the electricity,water, and telecommunications sectors in Belize to efficiently provide the highest quality services at affordable rates,ensuring the viability and sustainability of each sector.

Dr. Gilbert H. Canton returned to Belize in 1982 after completing his studies in Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Florida. From 1982 to 1983, Dr. Canton lectured in the fields of Engineering Science and Physics at the St. John's College while operating a family based farm. During the period 1983-1985, he served in the position of General Manager of Minter Naval Stores, a US based company that was involved in timber and rosin operations in Belize. From 1985 to 1988, Dr. Canton held the post of Project Officer in the Agricultural and Project Development Office for USAID/Belize. Returning to the timber industry in 1988, Dr. Canton was the Managing Director of Belize Timber Ltd. and oversaw the company's transition from a logging and saw milling enterprise to an integrated woodworking facility producing for the local and export markets lumber, veneer, plywood, and furniture products. Dr. Canton is presently an independent businessman and also holds the post of Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission. Dr. Canton also holds a number of professional and social affiliations which include: Member of American Society of Agricultural Engineers, Secretary of Belize Lumber Producers Association, Member of Agricultural Engineering Honor society,Past President of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and President of the National Horseracing Association .

Holder of an Agricultural Engineer Degree from the University Escuela Agricola Panamericana, Mr. Chanona has been manager of Belize's foremost land reclamation (Marine/Inland) and development company for the past twenty years. During this time, Mr. Chanona has also found time to serve as Executive Director of the Belize Tourism Association and as Chairman of the Belize Tourist Board. Presently he serves as a member of the Belize Port Authority Board and brings a wealth of experience to the current post of commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission.
