- The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (better known in psychiatric circles as the DSM) is a book of "disorders" and "syndromes" that are arbitrarily voted on for inclusion by psychiatrists. The book's main purpose is to label various human behaviors as diseases and create new patientsand income. Note that this book, like psychiatry, does not have any effective treatments or workable technology for actually curing any of the "disorders" it has created. The main "treatment" used for years by psychiatrists are drugs designed to keep a person quiet (now that lobotomies and shock treatment have gained so much bad press).
