- Growing up in Toronto’s Regent Park, Michael learned about the effects of poverty on people. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, he learned that excellent public services can level the playing field for all Ontarians no matter their socio economic status. He knew that politics could help create opportunities to improve the lives of those he saw around him. So strong was his draw to the positive power of politics, he began volunteering in NDP campaigns early in high school and by the time he graduated, his yearbook correctly predicted politics as his ambition.
