We are trying to be better at community building at this wiki, AboutUs. For that reason we are keeping track of how well we are doing welcoming people.
High value things we can do when welcoming:
- Ask folks to add a little about themselves on their user page: Perhaps you'd like to add a little about yourself to your user page? I always appreciate knowing a smidge about the folks I'm interacting with online :-)
- Actually visit their website (not just the article). Check around for what the correct capitalization is. Try to find something interesting there to comment on. Also, the click to their site will show up in their logs and give them some instant feedback that aboutus is driving them some traffic.
- Ask a concrete question that they'll want to respond to: "Did you take that photo? It's amazing!" ... "Are you the owner of XYZ.com? Your logo is incredible!"
- Rather than thanking them, compliment them on their work. "Thanks for working on my wiki" is nice but doesn't feel quite as good as "You rock ... you're doing a great job on your wiki".
- What do you find works for you when you are welcoming folks to our wiki?
