ProAna.us was a home to all who suffered from eating disorders.
Pro Ana [DOT] US
The website was started on October 12th 2005 by Anna Robbins and Mandy*. Within the first month of it's conception the website received over one million hits. Realizing the website was beginning to soar, Anna decided to add more administrators to help with the website (Becca*, Cody*, Michelle*, and Veronica*). To date Pro Ana [DOT] US was the only "Pro ED" site to have multiple administrators, or contributors. It is also the only one to have an email service for anyone who wants one.
In the beginning, Pro Ana [DOT] US provided a safe haven for those who were seeking solace with their eating disorder. To find friendships with people who understood their day to day concerns and issues with food. Pro Ana [DOT] US was one of the "first wavers" in the Pro Ana community. The site has been dead since 2008.
Because of Pro Ana [DOT] US's popularity on the Internet, they changed the definition in the Wikipedia for the definition of Pro Anorexia, and in turn the a new genre was born: Pro Ana. Pro Ana's do NOT provide dangerous tips, tricks, or emaciated images. Pro Ana's also do not believe in glorifying Eating Disorders as lifestyle choices. Further note they also believe recovery should be an option, and not a forceful decision.
Pro Ana [DOT] US has been noted in several newspaper articles, magazines and T.V. shows (1). Most notably: Newsweek, and Geraldo at Large. Anna (the owner of Pro Ana [DOT] US) did go on the Tyra Banks show, but due to writer conflicts the segment was cut.
Pro Ana [DOT] US had other ED sites connected to it as well, including:
I Eat Clay - an information website about other types of eating disorders, which includes a support forum. The Crazies - A Mental Illness Community Website
Anna Robbins, is still a National Eating Disorders Association Awareness Coordinator and is very active with NEDA.
- Some names have been changed to protect the identity of those people.
