PowerFrontiers - Power and Energy News

Description

Introduction

Our way of life will soon change as the fossil fuels on which we rely are depleted. PowerFrontiers was created to educate you about your energy choices. As a civilization we did not consider depletion or environmental issues when our current power infrastructures were established. We are about to face strong economic incentives to change the way we get our energy. Today, it is clear that our stores of oil will not last long. Oil prices will skyrocket as supplies diminish and we will be forced to look elsewhere to meet our energy needs. We have an opportunity now to correct past mistakes and reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy before an economic crisis occurs. To seize this opportunity, we as consumers need to become educated and choose clean, renewable power sources.

We must choose our power sources now

The world has been faced with energy crises before and has had to take quick action to continue economic growth. As forests were depleted and wood became scarce as an energy source, coal was used as a substitute. As the negative environmental impact of coal became obvious, oil became the substitute. In each case, the problem had already become a crisis before the solution was chosen. We know now that world oil sources are expected to peak sometime between 2010 and 2020, if not sooner. We have a number of different power sources from which we can choose as a substitute for oil. If we wait for a crisis to develop, we will no longer have a choice. By ignoring the problem now, we may repeat history and be forced to use a power source that is either non-renewable, polluting, or both. We must choose a power source for the future and put our efforts into making sure it is a viable option before the crisis. Some argue that we should not rely on a few sources of power, but that we should diversify among many sources. We feel that a better approach would be to choose a few power sources, pour research efforts into maximizing their potential, and decentralize the way energy is generated rather than diversifying among many non-renewable or polluting power sources.

Diversified power is not the answer to our power needs

Diversifying our energy sources has been promoted as the solution to our future energy needs and environmental concerns. The theory is that relying on many sources reduces our reliance on any one. Investments in natural gas electric plants and so called clean-coal technology are on the rise with corresponding shifts in the fuel mix expected in the coming decades. While this push towards diversification has reduced U.S. reliance on oil as fuel for electricity, it is a compromise solution that shifts reliance to other fossil fuel sources and does little to reduce pollution and the need for oil in transportation. It is also not economically feasible to dilute research funding into many different areas. We must choose renewable, clean energy sources that show the most promise and focus funding and research in those areas rather than continue to develop sources that are future dead ends. Despite its political popularity, the vision of diversified energy as an ultimate solution is misguided and acts as a stopgap measure to meet demand as fossil fuel supplies dwindle. The cheaper and cleaner solution in the longer term is to move directly to those power sources that will ultimately replace oil, gas, and coal. Rather than diversify, we must look to the frontiers of power today to provide the power for tomorrow.
