The Potosi Brewery Foundation
Description
Background
Founded in 1852, the Potosi Brewery was in continuous operation for 120 years. During that time it served not only as a place of employment, but also as a source of community pride and community identification. Its name was known throughout the tri-state area of southwestern Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, and eastern Iowa. Indeed, its name and product eventually became known throughout the Midwest.
When its doors were closed in 1972, the building was subsequently placed on the National Registry of Historic Places, being recognized as a facility that played a pivotal role in helping to shape this part of Wisconsin while contributing greatly to the history of brewing in America. Although a unique architectural structure of stone and brick enclosing more than 28,000 square feet, the building fell into a state of disrepair.
The Foundation
The Potosi Brewery buildings were purchased in the spring of 1999 by a group of concerned citizens who wished to save them from total deterioration. In March of 1999 a public meeting was held, and by February of 2000 a non-profit corporation, The Potosi Brewery Foundation Incorporated, was formed, a board of directors elected, and by-laws adopted. Fifteen people serve on the board of directors. The property was transferred to the foundation, 501(c)3 status obtained as well as a tax exempt number, and sub-committees were formed to deal with development, planning, and construction, promotion and marketing, and finance.
