Title
Pomodoro Restaurant in Seattle offers Italian and Spanish dining until late night.
Description
Pomodoro is the Italian word for tomato, or love apple as the early herbalists called this wonderful berry. Pomodoro literally means "apples of gold." It is a corrupted form of pomo dei mori apples, or fruits, of the Moors (tomatoes came to Italy from Morocco). The English word derives from the Spanish tomate, from the Aztec tornatl.
At first, the Europeans considered tomatoes to be poisonous and used them only as ornamental plants or in love potions and other amatory concoctions. Tomatoes are, after all, in the same family as Belladonna (Italian for "beautiful woman"), the notorious deadly nightshade which was used as a sexual stimulant and attractant from early Roman times through the Renaissance.
The daring Spaniards were probably the first Europeans to bite into the tomato and find that it wasn't poisonous, but edible, indeed delicious. In the 1500's, they brought the strange beautiful plant back to the old world from Peru where it had been grown since 500 B.C.
