Title

Creative Writing Resources for Teenagers

Description

Pomegranate Words was founded to address the lack of opportunities in schools for students interested in creative writing. Too often in our culture, the arts are not given the importance they deserve and are neglected in favor of other areas. At Pomegranate Words we believe that creativity and imagination are just as important, if not more important, than other subjects. How much can our society achieve with individuals who have technical and practical skills but who lack the ability to draw on the resources of their more intuitive sides?

Arts education has many documented benefits. Children who participate have higher grades and test scores and are more engaged in their communities. Arts education increases self-esteem, initiative in taking leadership, and empathy. Imagination is a thinking skill that, like critical reasoning, is used across many different disciplines, and can even improve math and science acheivement. Most importantly arts education enables young people to more easily find solutions to problems, and thus gives them hope in difficult situations.

Founder and Director Meg Hartmann first started teaching creative writing while a student at Brown University by volunteering with after-school programs for children. Ever since then, she's been looking for ways to expand the appreciation of quality and innovative writing, and to enable children to develop their creative, imaginative, and intuitive skills. She would be delighted to receive feedback or answer questions about the site and the organization--please email her at mhartmann@pomegranatewords.com.
