"Ceramic has accompanied man from time immemorial. It was with him when he tamed animals and entreated nature, and also when he raised a toast after battles won. It was width him when he greeted life and when he parted with it. It adorned both royal and rustic tables. It was smashed for good luck. It was picture and sculpture, a simple mug and an elaborate centerpiece. Lovingly kept in sideboards, it measured time for successive generations. Today, when we reverently take a ceramic cub in our hands, we look in it for traces of the past, guessing the lives, places, and events it has witnessed. And when we look at ceramic works of art, we are conscious of their affinity, since, like Biblical man, they were born of clay. All this reminds us that despite ubiquitous chaos there exists some hidden order according to which, just as centuries ago, three forces are needed to make a ceramic object - each, fire and human hands."
