Photo-Gems Ltd. is a family-run business located in the Carolinas that got its start while we were shopping for water-proof lockets. (Grew tired of changing out soggy photographs after accidentally wearing it in the shower several times.) After an unsuccessful search, we stumbled onto some unique antique jewelry called "stanhopes".
Stanhopes were first made in the mid 1800's. As far as we know, most were mass produced and showed black and white pictures of famous people or places. You can find many examples of stanhope antiques via a quick ebay search. Thinking this was the perfect solution, we searched for a company that could make one for us. With no luck there either, we were back to where we started.
Armed with advanced degrees in engineering and psychology (without which we would surely have lost our minds by now), and some great friends in all the right industries, we set out to create a modern-day version using color photos. What started out as a hobby, quickly became much more and now, years later, we're creating cherished keepsakes that make people smile.
