In 1986 a sixteen inch alligator named Clem was released in a series of spring fed ponds, called Pakoon Springs, on the Arizona Strip in the northwestern corner of our state. When the Bureau of Land Management bought the land in 2002 no one was sure if Clem was still around. There were multiple sightings of the reptile by BLM employees, though most remained skeptical. In early June of 2005, PHS made an attempt to trap Clem. After spending six days at the site only his tracks were found along the bank of one pond. PHS returned in mid-July to snare Clem in a trap the second night. The extremely underweight alligator, who measured 8 feet 3 inches, was loaded into a horse trailer in the morning and transported to the PHS sanctuary in Scottsdale that night.
