Title

Phi Kappa Psi La Gamma

Description

Louisiana Gamma, the second youngest chapter on campus, was founded as the gentleman's choice. Opting truly to promote the values of excellence, service, and gentlemanly treatment of women and our fellow brothers, its purpose at this university is to provide another option to the typical "Greek life." It is these values that Phi Kappa Psi saw as lacking in the Loyola Greek community, and it is these values that Phi Psi continually hopes to instill not only in its own family of brethren, but also in the greater Loyola population.

Seeing a great need for a chapter committed to true excellence and gentlemanly standards, a group of men rallied to form a colony of Phi Psi here at Loyola. Finally chartered on April 24, 1993, Phi Kappa Psi, Louisiana Gamma proved the stereotypes of a "frat boy" inconsistent with reality. Feeding off the Jesuit charisma of educating the whole person, this fraternity seeks to form all aspects of the human person through pledge season and continuing brotherhood education. Phi Psi gains a great joy in the service of others, including those who are not our brothers in the fraternity. The Brothers consistently have remained atop all other fraternities in academic achievement, setting an example not only for the Greek system but also for non-Greeks at Loyola. In so doing, it has proven to the skeptical that the original purpose of Greek life is not lost. The original fire sparking the Brotherhood of Phi Psi, both nationally and here at Loyola, is still very much alive and growing. In this day of prejudice and misunderstanding concerning Greek life (much of it well deserved), Phi Kappa Psi stands in stark contrast with others at Loyola. It is setting the bar of excellence always a little higher in hopes of pulling the Brothers and the Loyola community up to a greater degree of spiritual, physical, intellectual, and motivational excellence.

The founding of Phi Kappa Psi was in distinct contrast to the beginning of most other fraternities which grew, for the most part, from local clubs, formed without any idea of expansion. Phi Kappa Psi was founded as a national fraternity which should assemble within its folds outstanding students of kindred spirits at well-established colleges throughout the country.
