Description
Today, the city of Deux-Montagnes has a population of about 18,000. Some towns this size have only one or two schools and a single church. Deux-Montagnes has eight schools andfive churches, a surprising number for 18,000 residents. Two factors have had a determinant influence. The first is location: Deux-Montagnes's two French high schools, Polyvalente Deux-Montagnes and École Secondaire Lac des Deux-Montagnes, and one English high school, Lake of Two Mountains, serve a regional clientele.
The second, more important factor is, of course, the presence of two communities, French and English. Deux-Montagnes has four elementary schools (two French and two English), three high schools (two French and one English), and one special school. It has three English churches, one French church and one bilingual church.
On September 9, 1954, at the founding meeting of the People's Church of Saint-Eustache-sur-le-Lac, there were only six members representing Evangelical Christians. Revered L.E. Tuck came from the Lachute church every Sunday afternoon and led the congregation in a prayer and Bible reading session once a week. In the 50s, the Sunday service was held in the Masonic Hall on Cedar avenue and the prayer meetings were held in the homes of congregation members.
