Title
Penn's Store-Oldest Country Store
Description
Penn's Store is the oldest country store in America being run continuously by the same family. It has been in the Penn family since 1850. Nestled in the central region of Kentucky, Penn's Store has become a popular site for visitors seeking living history in an ever changing, modern world. The store remains today much as it has throughout its past 150+ years. It is not a restored landmark; it is an authentic landmark.
Inside the store you will find the counters and glass showcases much as they were at the turn of the century. Large spike nails are still in the ceiling where rolls of bologna and salt-cured country ham were hung for customers who shopped the country store. They now hold dried herbs from our herb garden. And the store still sells groceries, sandwiches, and dry goods as it always has. We also carry t-shirts, caps, hand made crafts, and specialty items for our visitors.
The store has been featured in many magazine and newspaper articles. Some articles tell about some of the events we have held. Our largest event each year is the Great Outhouse Blowout, a celebration of the old-fashioned facility, complete with outhouse racing. Some of the articles talk about the music featured at the store. It is not uncommon for some of our musician friends to drop in for an impromptu "concert". The store was even used as a backdrop for a Playboy shoot!
