Description
This is prepared for the sole purpose of acquainting you with the various and routine policies and procedures of the Portland Basketball Officials Association. The Portland Basketball Officials Association (PBOA) is an organization of over 300 men and women, dedicated to promoting the welfare of the game, its' players, officials and maintaining the highest standard of basketball officiating possible. The PBOA is chartered by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) which governs all interscholastic activities in the State of Oregon. The OSAA is affiliated nationally with the National Federation of State High School Associations. The OSAA has fifteen (15) chartered associations in the State of Oregon. These chartered associations are responsible for providing officials for all schools located in their geographical area. The PBOA provides officials for over ninety two (92) schools at all levels of play for high schools, junior highs and grade schools. In addition, the PBOA has enjoyed a long and successful association with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) which serves as an excellent training ground for beginning officials.
As a dues paying member, you will be required to serve a minimum of three (3) years as a probationary and associate member before becoming eligible to be considered for regular membership. During these three (3) years, you will be assigned games on the basis of your availability, training and ability. The annual dues required for membership provides National Federation rule books, OSAA certification, insurance and membership. Only certified OSAA officials may work games in the PBOA
Meetings are held weekly and you are expected to attend and participate in the training sessions that are conducted by PBOA clinic staff members. Training meetings are from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM and cover officiating philosophy, rules, mechanics and other topics which will assist you in becoming a competent official. Games are assigned weekly based on regular attendance at training meetings.
