The Humane Society of Sarasota County, Inc. was established in 1952 and relies solely on donations to underwrite daily expenses of more then $2,500. It turns no animal away, has one of the highest save rates in the nation, and offers many wonderful community programs. HSSC's education department works with abused children in an effort to break their cycle of abuse by teaching caring through hands-on interaction with animals. HSSC also offers a low-cost spay/neuter program in which residents volunteer their time at the shelter in exchange for having their pets neutered at a discounted rate, and its pet therapy program has been recognized for its compassion in working with the elderly in nursing homes and schools for special needs children. The Humane Society of Sarasota County provides all these services, yet it receives no State, Federal, or County dollars, nor does it receive funding from Sarasota's Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC) or from any other animal welfare organization. The shelter depends on private contributions to care for the over 4,000 animals it receives each year, or 330 per month. It takes approximately 70 pounds of food per day to nourish the hunger of our furry friends.
Litter season has begun and currently the shelter has 90 dogs and 130 cats that are waiting for good homes. Think about this for a moment, one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 additional dogs and one female cat and offspring can produce an additional 420,000 cats in just seven years. For the country to wipe out animal homelessness, every person would need to take home 15 dogs and 45 cats.
