The Danish Society for Patient Safety (DSFP) was established December 2001 and is a non-profit organization. The aim of the Society is to ensure that patient safety aspects are a part of all decisions made in Danish health care. In 2001 a Danish pilot study showed that 9 percent of all patients admitted to a Danish hospital are exposed to an adverse event. This fact was the main reason for the establishment of the Society.

The board of the Society consists of representatives from a wide range of stakeholders in Danish health care: the health care professionals, patient and research organizations, the hospital owners, the pharmaceutical and medical device industry and Local Government Denmark. This composition offers a great possibility for all parties to work together for the common patient safety interest.

The Danish Society for Patient Safety gathers, spreads and develops knowledge and initiatives. The Society has become an important political actor and were involved in the preparation and passing of the Danish Act on Patient Safety. The Society has an ongoing working program with prioritized areas for improvement. In 2005 the Society will focus on a range of areas including:
