Description
Red ginger is a native of Polynesia. Edible ginger root, turmeric, and cardamom are some of the approximately 1350 species in the Zingiberaceae family. Instead of a regular root system, ginger's, like heliconias, spread and propagate by fat, knobby, ground level stems called rhizomes.
Valentine Heliconia are named after valentine's day because that is the season when they are most likely in bloom. They also make a wonderful valentine's bouquet because of their brilliant red color and heart shaped appearance.
For extended life of your flowers trim a half of an inch off the base of the stem. Then lay the flowers and foliage in room temperature water for an hour. To extended life further add 1 or 2 drops of household beach to vase water daily to kill any unwanted bacteria. Also make sure the arrangement you create is not placed in direct sunlight, near heating or air vents, and drafts
