- In ancient times parasols were considered to be magical and were enjoyed only by royalty. It was believed that the canopy of the sky was formed by the body of a lovely celestial Goddess; spanning the earth as a vast parasol she touched the ground only with her toes and fingertips: her star-studded belly creating the night sky. All royal parasols became known as earthly embodiments of the Goddess, and the shade they provided symbolized her protection of the King and Queen.
