- Omie, the character, is based on me. Omie is a nickname I've gone by since I was in middle-school. Originally, the comic strip started out as an occasional one-liner joke-type comic. It was a way for me to put myself in any funny situation I could come up with. The first Omie comics appeared in 1999. Until a few years ago, Omie didn't really have a story. Eventually, I wanted a little direction with it, and when I moved away from my hometown, Omie moved away from everyone, as well.
