- "Lampworking", the term is derived from early glass bead artists who used oil lamps as their heat source, is a process by which glass is heated on a steel rod, called a mandrel, in a very hot flame bringing the glass to the melting point. The molten glass is then wrapped around the mandrel to create the bead. Once the desired bead shape and size has been achieved the bead is then placed in a kiln to start the annealing process of slowly reducing the temperature of the hot glass. The annealing process makes the glass beads very strong and durable.
