Title

Oklahoma Gazette

Description

The Oklahoma Gazette’s mission is to analyze those elements which affect the quality of life in central Oklahoma; to stimulate thought and participation with information and opinion on entertainment opportunities and social needs; to expose conditions and actions that detract from our quality of life; and to recognize those individuals and actions that deserve commendation within the community. The Oklahoma Gazette seeks to accomplish its mission by providing a free weekly newspaper with competitive advertising rates, editorial content meeting high journalistic standards and a visually attractive design.

In October of 1979, the Oklahoma Gazette was born as a bi-monthly newspaper to promote historic preservation and neighborhood conservation. It began with a circulation of approximately 2,000. The paper was published through the efforts of volunteers.

Several years later, then-editor Leigh Eldridge traveled to New Orleans and returned with a copy of Gambit, the New Orleans alternative newsweekly. Gambit focused on arts and entertainment and contained a calendar of events. These features were added to the Gazette’s editorial content, and the paper began its evolution into its modern form.
