Title

Odessa Crime Stoppers

Description

The idea for Crime Stoppers came in 1976 when Greg MacAleese, an Albuquerque, New Mexico Police Officer, read about a group called "Crime Stoppers" in the popular Dick Tracey comic strip. The comic strip version of Crime Stoppers was a group of Junior G-Men, who helped the fictional character solve crimes. MacAleese received permission of the late artist Chester Gould to use the name Crime Stoppers, and one of the most successful citizen-law enforcement groups was started.

Today, there are more that 850 Crime Stoppers organizations in all 50 United States, as well as in Puerto Rico and Guam, and the foreign countries of Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and elsewhere. The work of Crime Stoppers has been cited by law enforcement agencies of all levels as a major deterrent to criminal activities, and a positive force in making communities a safer place in which to live.
