O-I.com sells glass containers for food, beer, wine, & other beverages.
O-I Glass and Plastics Packaging
O-I (Owens-Illinois) is one of the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of plastic and glass containers. Statistics show that one of every two glass containers made worldwide it’s produced by O-I or its affiliates. This is the reason for which the company is nowadays considered as one of the most important players on the US market and this is also the reason for which the company obtained a place in the high profile Fortune 500 list.
Website
O-I.com clearly reflects the global success that the company is enjoying. The main page acts as a portal for the more localized regional sub-sites. This approach leads to some interesting developments in regard to the traditional website sections that corporate websites usually employ. If the Investor Relations section is pretty much the same on all the regional websites, others like Careers and Press Room are highly localized, thus giving an extra edge in flexibility. There can also be distinguished slight alterations in the brand image depending on the cultural background of the region itself.
The main task that O-I.com assumes though follows a rather traditional approach of using the web presence as a link with its customers. The catalog section, again slightly differing from one region to other is probably the most advanced portion of the websites. However the regional customization can only go so far, as the regional websites are aimed towards continents rather than countries.
History
O-I roots go back in 1903 when Michael J Owens, company’s founder, invented the automatic glass-making device and with this he achieved the most significant development in the glassmaking field and officially started mass production in the field. Owens-Illinois Company resulted from the fusion of two companies in 1929: Owens Bottle-Machine Company with Illinois Glass Company. In 1965 simultaneous to the company’s name change (Owens-Illinois) another event took place, one that would put the company firmly on its road to success, the company made its entry in the plastic packaging production industry. This will ultimately have an enormous impact on the future of the company.
Soon after the new headquarter building was opened in Toledo, Ohio. Thirty years later the O-I plastics group becomes a multi billion dollar business. The company expands its manufacturing operations in Australia, New Zealand, China and Indonesia.
In 2004 O-I becomes the largest glass container producer on four continents.
In 2007 founder Michael J Owens received recognition for his ground breaking research and finally was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Impact
O-I is one of the few select companies that achieved global dominance, without creating a high media profile. This means that although the next glass bottle you will hold in your hand has a chance of 50% of being produced by the corporation, very few people will actually be aware of it.
The continuous expansion of the company into new emerging markets, such as Russia, did however have an impact on the local business community and more precisely in the competition, especially in places where US corporations are usually seen in a bad light. These factors however were just some mere bumps and the policy of maintaining a low profile has paid off and the initial frictions were usually bypassed rather easily.
