Part of a dynamic, varied and challenging profession, Institute members are largely involved with the implementation of urban and rural planning - district and regional plans, and associated policies. Plans and policies are implemented in accordance with a range of acts and related statutes and primarily concerned with land management and the protection and enhancement of New Zealand’s natural and human resources.
One of the distinctive features of the planning profession is its diversity. Planning is a complex profession requiring the input of a raft of different disciplines and the Institute embraces all professionals with a range of qualifications working in planning. Planners work in cities, suburbs and towns and can specialise in, for example, transportation, urban design, or rural environments. They are students, consultants, planning directors, teachers, lawyers, and planning commissioners and each and everyone contributes to our communities, the Institute and planning practice.
