Description
The Blues is responsible for most American music forms. It's found in the roots of almost every type of music and if you ask any performer, they have heard of, if not been influenced by a blues performer somewhere along the way. The blues comes from hardship but often inspires hope. It was sung in the fields to remind those less fortunate that there was a better place for them, it was performed in seedy little nightspots to remind us all that life isn't necessarily always happy, and most recently, it was performed at Avery Fisher because those involved in popular music today recognize the importance of the genre. This year is marked as "Year of the Blues" because we can't let this important American Art Form die! That's where the Blues Societies of the world come in. It is these Societies, built on the HARD work of individuals, striving to help pay back the community that is responsible for the music that we hear today. That's why these Societies exist and that's why we need YOUR help and support!
The New York Blues & Jazz Society is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization that exists through membership and donations. We are dedicated to educating the public about blues and jazz music, and supporting area musicians who perform these important cultural genres.
