The West Side Nut Club has, since its inception, used the slogan, "From Small Acorns Large Oaks Grow." From a handful of members who organized the club in 1921, few of whom are still alive with us, the membership has grown to its limit of 300. Although many of our activities are social, when the chips are down, the civic part of our program received the most stress. It can truthfully be said that we go from the ridiculous to the sublime in our yearly activities. The International Convention which takes place in August of each year is the outstanding fun fest of this outing as well as other outdoor meetings. However, in contrast to the lighter side of the picture, through the efforts of work of some twenty standing committees, our board of directors and officers, we are very much concerned with and are constantly at work on a program to promote the civic welfare of the west side as well as the City of Evansville.
Some of our major accomplishments, which in some cases were achieved after years of work and effort. Further, may we emphasize that we do not pretend to point with selfish pride to these achievements, for we realize full well that only through the cooperation of other interested groups, individuals and public sentiment could some of these be accomplished. Our hope and aim is that we might continue to work with, and receive the support of, many other civic-minded individuals and organizations to bring about the realization of our current projects.
One of Evansville's most civic-minded groups is a unique organization known as the West Side Nut Club. It's humble beginnings were in 1921 when a small group of businessmen and merchants on the west side of Evansville, who frequently lunched together, decided that an organization was needed to push the interests of their side of town.
