About Us
We all have one woman to thank for giving us the opportunity to be part of the Girl Scouts in North Iowa... and that woman is Gertrude "Gert or Buzz" Fick. She started as a teacher in Hampton, Iowa, and her interest in youth led her to the World of Girl Scouting (She organized the first Girl Scout troop in Hampton).
In 1953, thanks to Mrs. Fick, 13 north Iowa communities combined to organize the North Iowa Girl Scout Council: Britt, Forest City, Garner, Lake Mills, Mason City, Meservey, Nora Springs, Northwood, Rudd, Ventura, Dumont, Clarksville, and Leland.
There were 1,723 girls registered in the North Iowa Girl Scout Council that first year. Through her leadership, the Council grew and grew through the years. Gert's love for the out-of-doors also led to the formation of Camp Tanglefoot (formerly Camp Gaywood) in Clear Lake, Iowa. She served as the Camp Director until her retirement, but her interest in the camp and Girl Scouts continued until her death at age 92.
