Description

INTRODUCTION

“Let us make our city more attractive and peaceful.” This might not sound too stunning but it is the slogan of this sprouting, dynamic city located on the Nobi plain, just about halfway between Tokyo and Osaka. Blessed with its mild climate and abundant water supply from the Kiso, Nagara, and other rivers, Nagoya is the heart of Japan’s business, industrial, and transportation sectors, linking east and west Japan.

Just over 100 years ago in 1889, Nagoya became a city and at that time the population was 157,496. Sixteen surrounding towns and villages merged into the city on in August 1921 and the population jumped to 616,700. In 1934, it surged to one million and although it decreased during World War II, the city grew rapidly thereafter and the population reached two million in February 1969. Today, over 2,150,000 citizens reside in the sixteen wards throughout the city.
