Website

NISource.com has an extremely clean design, obviously influenced by minimalist tendencies. From a functional perspective the website extensively offers details for is investor base while leading the customers to the incorporated companies which deal directly and are much more customer oriented. The dry feel that the website emanates is further amplified by the lack of information on the front page. All the corporate details together with the established sections such as company profile and career opportunities can only be found on the dedicated sub-pages.

History

The main and the oldest company NISource Corporation includes is Columbia Gas, a natural gas provider with a great deal of history behind it. Columbia Gas&Electric was founded in 1926 and 22 years later it became Columbia Gas System, Inc. The company produced and distributed gas for decades in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. By 1930 the business expanded and was composed of 25 companies. In 1955 a world record was established: 901-million cubic feet of gas delivered in 24 hours. Columbia Gas System and NIsource merge in 2000. The new formed corporation keeps the name of NISource.

The second incorporated company as importance in the NISource portfolio is Bay State Gas with a history dating back to the middle of the 19th century, when the Springfield Gas Company was established. The high point in the history of this subsidiary is the development of pipelines which would ultimately link the natural gas fields from the Southwestern and Gulf States with New England, in the 50’s and 60’s. This company merged with NISource in 1999, creating at the moment the 10th largest natural gas company in the United States

Nowadays NISource has a combined revenue of over 7 billion dollars and more than 7.000 employees, making it one of the top players in the US energy market. As a corporate policy, the company is trying hard to maintain the brands it has acquired and offers a large degree of autonomy to the subsidiaries that it owns.

Impact

NISource is a relative unknown, even for its customers. The reason behind this, is the tendency showed by the company to present local brands to the communities it serves. This means that although Columbia Gas and Bay State Gas are subsidiaries they have a much higher brand awareness than the mother company. Also as the company acts only in the internal US market, makes the corporation absolutely unknown to the global market.

This situation changes drastically though once you begin assessing the company’s impact on the financial markets. With a customer base passing over the 3 million mark and with an employee force of just 7000. the company is a model of corporate efficiency and the results on the NY Stock Exchange have certainly attracted the attention of investors. Altogether, this relatively young company, which nonetheless holds some of the oldest energy brands in US prefers to keep a low profile and stay out from the media’s attention. It is this sort of unspectacular development that finally won the confidence of its investors.
