Robert

Newfoundweb.com was officially launched on July 23rd, 2004. The site was founded by myself Promoturr (Adam B). The idea behind this site was in my head for many years. I even registered the domain name a few times over the last 5 years. The current site that you now see was in the design stage for about 2 years prior to the official public launch (July 23rd, 2004). In that time, I tried to create my own custom site from scratch. But with my heavy workload, it was taking me forever. Also with the Internet ever revolving, it was making things very hard to stay on top of code wise. So I decided to scratch that idea and start working with open source codes that are readily available on the Internet. After testing what now seems to be hundreds of different codes, I finally settled on what you see today. A open source portal that has been modified by myself. The site has taken a lot of time for me to create and maintain. But I do this joyfully, knowing what it has already accomplished and also having a idea of where it may be going.

Why did I start this site? Well I have been on the Internet for many years. I have designed many web sites in that time and also been part of a few online communities. In the five year span that I had this site in my mind, I searched the Internet throughly looking for good Newfoundland web sites. I found the results of my searching rather displeasing. There are very few sites on the Internet that Newfoundlanders around the world could gather and communicate with one another. There were less then a handful of sites and each one of them seemed to be lacking features that I would have liked to have in a online community. For example, one of the popular sites in that handful, didn't even have a login system or a search function. You could always pretend to be somebody without ever having to login and if you wanted to find your post, good luck. You had to scroll through hundreds of post to find it. So, this is what started my journey of design and creation of Newfoundweb.com. The main goal is give Newfoundlanders at home and afar a place to communicate online with one another and share wonderful discussions and information on what I believe to be one of the best places in the world. The second goal behind the site is to help promote the province to the rest of the world. I consider Newfoundland a hidden gem and I believe with the right promotion, it could make a huge difference to its current economy. Out of all the places that I have been in North America, I have yet to find a place like Newfoundland. I don't just say this because I am from there. I am sure it plays a part in it, but I still haven't seen a place that has such beautiful scenery and people. Its truly one of a kind. So, while the current site is well on its way to reaching the main goal. Its still lacking for its second goal. In time I hope this site to become a one stop resource for people wishing to learn about Newfoundland. Hopefully we can provide some insight into History, Culture, Tourism, etc.

So that is the jist of how Newfoundweb.com became to be. Now I have to ask you. Why not sign up if you already haven't? Take part in the great discussions that take place at this site everyday. The registration process is free and easy. Take part in what I believe to be one of the best online Newfoundland experiences. Its as close to home as you can get online.
